The Garnett Fire Department released the following storm shelter location information on April 8, 2016:

In the event of a weather warning, the Garnett Fire Department has established the following locations for the public to seek shelter -

This system identifies persons who have signed up for the service who are in the path of a tornado, severe thunderstorm or flooding.  The system uses National Weather Service electronic alerts and delivers warnings to you by telephone. Additionally, evacuation notices, bio-terrorism alerts, boil water notices and missing child reports can also be received through this system.

Emergency food distribution, aka "Harvesters" is held the fourth Thursday of each month at the Anderson County Fairgrounds (Quonset Hut or Community Building), located in the North Lake Park.  City of Garnett employees help with the food distribution held monthly at 4:00 p.m.

Garnett area citizens are invited to participate in the Anderson County Recycling Program. A recycling trailer is staged in the Country Mart parking lot on the second Tuesday of each month, courtesy of the Anderson County Landfill/Recycling Center. Items to be dropped into the designated bins are:

  • #1-#17 plastic bottles, preferably washed out;
  • Glass bottles and glass containers, preferably washed;
  • Carboard boxes, must be flattened;
  • Cans, must be crushed.

NO! NO!  Please do not dispose of plastic bags or household trash into the recycling trailer.
