FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 09/17/2021:

GARNETT, KS-  Garnett Tourism is hosting a contest in search of the next new “big” event in Garnett. The City is encouraging organizations to enter the New 2022 Special Event Contest by application by November 15, 2021 deadline.   The winning special event will receive a minimum of $1,000 towards the advertising of the new event or execution of the event.  The winning entry in the contest would need to take place in 2022. The judging criteria is as follows:

Points will be tabulated to determine the winner -

  • Creativity and Fun – What is the “WOW” factor that makes this event unique? How much fun will the community, as well as visitors, have at this new event in Garnett?  1-20 points.
  • Process and Preparation – Organized, well thought out plan. 1-20 points.
  • Impact – The potential economic, educational, entertainment value the event gives the community. 1-20 points.
  • Complete Application – Application is submitted by the deadline (11/15/21) containing the details outlining the event as the application requests. 1-20 points.
  • BONUS POINTS: The Garnett Tourism Advisory Committee will invite all applicants to present their new special event idea before the committee and City Commission on Tuesday, November 16. This is your opportunity to share your idea with the freedom to use creativity, enthusiasm, and props, similar to “Shark Tank”, only more like “Dolphin Tank” (no one gets hurt)!  Time given: Up to five (5) minutes for presentation and up to five (5) minutes for Q&A. Times to be scheduled with applications. The public may attend. 50-100 points.


The winner will be announced during the November 23 Garnett City Commission Meeting.

Type of Events Garnett Tourism is accepting for consideration include but are not limited to:

  • Artistic (concerts, art and craft shows)   
  • Cultural (ethnic, holiday or religious events) 
  • Economic (business and trade fairs, ex: farm equipment shows, home and garden shows, sports show (boat/RV/outdoor) 
  • Other festivals 
  • Recreational (entertainment sporting events and games)

GARNETT, KS - Garnett Tourism received five (5) entries in the 2022 New Special Event Contest. Those entries included:

  • At the Walker, event submission by The Walker Art Committee
  • Laugh, Laugh, Love: A Night of Comedy and Charity Handyman Date Auction, event submission by Garnett Business and Professional Women
  • Garnett's Home and Garden Expo, event submission by Growing Garnett Heart and Soul
  • Faith & Blue, event submission by Hope Anthem Garnett
  • Antique Engine and Tractor Show, Anderson County Flywheelers

At the conclusion of the presentation phase of the contest, a recommendation was provided by the Garnett Tourism Advisory Committee to the City Commission on the selection of the contest winner. The City Commission will consider the Committee's recommendation during the November 23rd Garnett City Commission Meeting, to be held in the Commission Room at City Hall. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the meeting in person or watch the meeting stream live on the @garnettks Facebook page.

NEW - 2022 SPECIAL EVENT CONTEST

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11/24/2021:

GARNETT, KS:  At the Tuesday, November 23rd Garnett City Commission meeting,

the Commission approved the recommendation of the Tourism Advisory Committee

by awarding not just one winner but declared all five entries submitted in the

New 2022 Special Event Contest as winners. Each winning organization will receive

a minimum $1,000 in Transient Guest Tax Funds grant towards approved expenses relating to their contest entry event. The winners are:

  • “At the Walker,” hosted by The Walker Art Committee
  • “Laugh, Laugh, Love: A Night of comedy and Charity Handyman Date Auction,” hosted by Garnett Business and Professional Women
  • “Garnett’s Home and Garden Expo,” hosted by Growing Garnett Community Heart & Soul
  • “Faith & Blue,” hosted by Hope Anthem Garnett
  • “Antique Engine and Tractor Show,” hosted by the Anderson County Flywheelers
