TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2021: The City Commission unanimously approved Resolution 2021-12 selecting and appointing Travis Wilson, City Clerk as the new full time City Manager.
City staff and employees congratulate Mr. Wilson on his appointment as City Manager.
Travis Wilson was born and raised here in Garnett. He has remained a city resident his whole life, even when attending college. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Ottawa University.
Travis will tell you his working career began in 1998 at age 15, his first job working for Jason Sjorlund at the Garnett Sonic Drive-In. He continued his employment at the Sonic through college. He has worked for Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Ottawa, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation, Burlington, Flint Hills Community Health Center in Emporia and Kalmar in Ottawa.
On August 13, 2018, Travis began his career with the City of Garnett, accepting the position of Municipal Court Clerk, as long-standing court clerk, Colette McDonnell was retiring. While holding that position he was promoted to Interim City Clerk/Finance Director in March 2019. He held both Municipal Court Clerk and City Clerk positions until June of 2020, when Director of Human Resources was added to his position. He relinquished his Municipal Court duties to Payroll Clerk/Deputy City Clerk/City Treasurer – now Municipal Court Clerk, Nancy Hermreck.
In June of 2021, he was promoted to Interim City Manager when former City Manager, Chris Weiner, resigned his position. Travis managed his role as City Clerk and Human Resources Director while also Interim City Manager.
The Garnett City Commission approved Resolution 2021-12 on Tuesday, December 14, 2021. This resolution confirms the appointment of Travis Wilson as the new, full-time City Manager for the City of Garnett, Kansas.
Unrelated to his city functions, Travis also holds the title of Treasurer for USD 365.
When asked why he wants to be city manager, Travis’ response is, “The main reason I wanted to be city manager is I want to serve the community I grew up in. It has been good to me. The least I can do is give back and try to make a difference.”

Please watch for the Winter '22 issue of Town Talk to arrive in your mailbox (or on this website) for a complete article about City Manager Travis Wilson.
